التلوث المتبادل هو انتقال الملوثات المختلفة (البكتيريا، الفيروسات،...) من أغذية و أدوات أو أسطح ملوثة آأغذية النيئة(خضروات وفواكه ولحوم طازجة وغيرها ) إلى الغذاء غير الملوث و الجاهز للاستهلاك،مما يسبب تلوثه فمثلا: تنتقل بكتريا من الدجاج الخام إلى الغذاء الجاهز للأآل مثل الخس والطماطم وعندما نستخدم نفس لوح التقطيع من دون غسله أو تطهيره بعد التغيير من غذاء إلى آخر.
و يحدث أيضا حينما تخزن الأطعمة الخام فوق الأطعمة الجاهزة للأآل,بحيث تبلل عصارة المنتجات الخام الغذاء الجاهز للأكل ...
يمكن أن تنتقل الأحياء الدقيقة في المنشات الغذائية بواسطة عامل الغذاء أو المعدات أو الأواني أو طعام آخر.
